One day in Bruges with kids, at their pace

Children aged 2 to 10, a short flat route from the Markt, and a sit-down break about every hour.

    • Example start 09:00, finish about 19:30
    • 4 core stops, 2 detours
    • About 60 minutes of walking, 100 with the windmills
    • One advance booking at most, the workshop

The short answer: For children under 10, build the day around the stops in the centre that need no booking and little stamina: Historium's walk-through of medieval Bruges, the playground at Koningin Astridpark, a half-hour canal boat and the swans at Minnewater. They sit within ten minutes' walk of each other, so a toddler can manage the whole core and you can stop whenever you need to. Add the windmill walk for children who can do twenty minutes on foot each way, and Choco-Story's workshop only from 7, because it does not admit younger children. In rain, the indoor stops stand and the outdoor ones drop.

    breakfast, lunch, the boat, dinner

East first, then the centre, then south to the water

The route goes out to the windmills while legs are fresh, returns to the Markt for Historium and lunch, and drifts south in the afternoon so the day ends near the dinner streets rather than back across town. Only the workshop is a fixed slot; every other time is a suggestion. To shorten the day, drop the windmills first and the swans second.

    How old are your children?

Choose your version here, then follow the itinerary. The age limits are the venues' own; the walking advice is ours. Times are examples. A dotted time is a booked slot that the rest of the day bends around.

Start Oude Burg 14, three minutes from the Markt

    1. Horse carriages waiting on the Markt in front of the stepped gable houses

Breakfast at a café on or near the Markt

Pick a café on the Markt or Steenstraat, with outdoor tables if the weather allows: small children can watch the horse carriages line up while you eat, and the windmill walk starts from here.

Sint-Janshuismolen still grinds flour and lets one adult and one child up its steep stairs at a time. Skip it with a toddler and take the boat in the morning instead. Days on Musea Brugge.

      Monday?

On Mondays Sint-Janshuismolen is closed, so the windmill stop becomes a walk along the ramparts without going inside, or moves to another day. Historium, Choco-Story, the boats and both parks run on Mondays. Timing does not change.

    4. The Historium on the Markt: a grey neo-Gothic front with arched windows and red flags

      Historium on the Markt

A walk-through of medieval Bruges with film sets, sound and scents, which holds a pre-schooler's attention better than cases of objects.

Leave the buggy at the audio-guide counter. Tickets on the day or on the official site.

Frites from the two stands by the Belfry are quickest; a brasserie on the Burg gives you a table and a toilet.

Then Koningin Astridpark: a large playground, a pond, a fountain and benches. This is the longest break of the day and the one to protect.

Children from 7 temper melted chocolate and make bark with toppings and chocolate drawings to take home, then walk the museum to a tasting.

      Times, tickets and details

Under-7s cannot enter the workshop room; a second adult takes them round the museum or to the park. Book on Choco-Story. The Frietmuseum is next door, and one combined ticket covers both museums.

      Workshop full?

Visit the Choco-Story museum without the workshop. It is shorter and still ends with a tasting, and any age can go in. The time it frees goes to the boat and Minnewater.

    8. A canal boat passing old houses in Bruges

A canal boat from the Dijver

Half an hour under low bridges and behind houses you cannot see from the street, and the one stop where everyone sits down.

      Times, tickets and details

Every operator runs the same route from the jetties near Rozenhoedkaai and Wollestraat. Details on Visit Bruges.

      Raining?

Rain affects the windmills, the boat and Minnewater; operators may stop the uncovered boats in steady rain. Replace them with a slower hour in the chocolate shops on Katelijnestraat or a second indoor stop such as Historium's exhibition floor, both in the centre, so no extra travel is needed. Historium, the workshop and the museum run as planned.

    10. Minnewater lake, with the red-brick Kasteel Minnewater reflected in the water

      Swans at Minnewater

South along the Dijver and through the Begijnhof gate to Minnewater, where the city's swans gather: benches, grass and a bridge to stand on.

      Winter?

From 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027 the Christmas markets are open from 11:00 with free entry, and the Winter Glow ice rink is open indoors, €9 for everyone and free under 3. On a cold day, swap Minnewater for the rink and walk the markets before dinner.

Early dinner around Walplein, then home

The brasseries around Walplein and Katelijnestraat do children's portions and outdoor tables.

      Times, tickets and details

Arriving before 19:00 gives you a better chance of a table without a reservation; on summer weekends phone ahead anyway.

    Practical notes

    Buggies and toilets
The whole loop is flat but cobbled, so a buggy with larger wheels copes better. Historium takes the buggy at its counter; Choco-Story allows prams but advises against taking them round the museum trail, and has four steps at its entrance; the boat needs it folded. Changing tables are confirmed at Historium. The city maps its public toilets on brugge.be.
    Booking
Only the Choco-Story workshop needs booking, and in school holidays it should be booked days ahead. Historium, the mill and the boats sell tickets on the spot, which is what keeps the plan loose when a nap runs long. Current ticket prices are on each venue's site, linked below.
    Arriving from the station
Bruges station is about twenty minutes on foot from the Markt, or a short ride on a city bus; join the route at breakfast. Carry fruit and water, because Astridpark and Minnewater have no kiosk. For guests, there is a supermarket a few doors from the suite on Oude Burg.
    Food needs
Belgian pralines and most workshop chocolate contain milk and often nuts, and Choco-Story publishes no allergen list, so tell them when you book and ask again on arrival. Brasseries around the Markt generally have a children's menu; ask before sitting down if that matters.
The Candy Family Suite, with a candy mural above a double bed

A suite two minutes from the first stop

Oude Burg 14 is two minutes from the Belfry, so a midday nap back at the suite is realistic. Four of our suites sleep three or four, and the Candy Family Suite gives the children their own bedroom.

    Questions about this day

If we only have half a day, which stops should we keep?

Keep Historium, the canal boat and Astridpark's playground. All three are within ten minutes' walk of the Markt, none needs booking, and together they take about three hours including a lunch break. Add Minnewater only if the children still have energy at the end.

How much walking is it, and where can we cut it?

About an hour on foot for the core route and about 100 minutes with the windmills, at buggy pace and spread over the day. The windmill walk is the single longest stretch, twenty minutes each way, so drop it first. Minnewater to Walplein is the other stretch you can skip by taking a jetty closer to dinner.

Can a 5-year-old do the chocolate workshop?

No. Choco-Story admits children from 7 to its workshop room, with a paying adult taking part for under-12s. A 5-year-old can visit the Choco-Story museum with its tasting, and the chocolate shops on the kids' chocolate day are open to any age.

Does the day work with a baby in a buggy?

Yes, on the core route. The buggy is parked at Historium's counter, folded on the boat, and otherwise rolls everywhere, though the cobbles are rough. Under-2s travel free on the boat. In the suite, a baby up to 2 stays free and a cot is free on request.

Start and end this day two minutes from the Belfry

Four family suites sleeping three or four, with a fridge for the leftovers and a door code for late finishes. Book direct for €10 off, free cancellation up to 72 hours before arrival.
